Xbox One controller, we already know, supports Chrome OS via a wired connection. However, a new Reddit post claims that it is possible to use a wireless Xbox One controller (via Bluetooth) on Chrome OS currently.

As per the post, support for the wireless Xbox One controller is there in the latest beta channel (version 78.3904.35 and Platform version: 12499.14.0). Just for reminder, the latest beta channel update for the ChromeOS came on September 30.

  • BROAD COMPATIBILITY - The HDMI-VGA adapter is compatible with computer, pc, desktop, laptop, ultrabook, notebook, Chromebook, Raspberry Pi, Intel Nuc, Roku, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Wii U, Set Top Box, TV BOX, or other devices with HDMI port; NOT compatible with Blu-ray player and devices with low-power HDMI ports such as SONY PS4, Apple.

In the changelog, there is nothing specifically mentioned about the support for the wireless Xbox One controller.

However, the commits do talk about 'Support new Xbox Wireless Controller FW' and note that Microsoft is expected to 'to update the firmware for Xbox Wireless Controller (045e:02fd) to modify which field is populated with the Xbox button state.'

Also, the changelog talks about addressing an issue with the vibration in the Xbox One S Wireless Controller over Bluetooth. Prior to this beta channel, the vibration didn't work as intended.

So, the changelog does hint of working towards adding and smoothening support for the wireless Xbox One controllers. However, there is no more official information on it for now. But the change has been confirmed by a few Reddit users.

Moreover, users say the latest beta channel not just supports wireless Xbox One controller, but also a third-party controller and DualShock 3 as well. As of now, it is not clear which third-party controllers are supported, but one Reddit user confirmed that his Gamesir is working fine.

Talking of why Google might have added the support for the wireless Xbox One controller, many say it is in preparation for the Stadia gaming service. Google, as we all know, is working very hard to make Stadia, which is set to arrive sometime later this month, a big success.

Therefore, by adding support for all major controllers and all major platforms in all forms, the search giant likely wants to extend the reach of its upcoming gaming service. Google Stadia will allow you to play modern games on almost any screen without downloading or installing them.

Another likely reason for the support of the wireless Xbox One controller could be related to the Xbox game streaming app. Microsoft is currently working on two products to help users stream games on small screens.

First, is the Project xCloud and the second, is the new console streaming preview, which was only recently in news. While Project xCloud is a cloud-based service, the new console streaming allows you to play the games that you have on your console.

Earlier this week, Microsoft allowed Xbox One testers to access the Console Streaming feature. The feature allows you to play any of your own Xbox One games (on your console) on a mobile device.

Project xCloud, currently, supports just four games. The Console Streaming feature supports all Xbox 360 and Xbox One games that you have on your console. However, the Console Streaming feature is limited only to a few users presently.

'If you're an Xbox Insider in the Alpha and Alpha Skip-Ahead rings in the US and UK, you can now try a preview of Xbox Console Streaming,' said Xbox program manager, Jonathan Hildebrandt.

As for the support of wireless Xbox One controller on Chrome OS (via beta channel), we will update the story with any new development.

Where can I connect to the Wi-Fi network?

Ohio State has substantial Wi-Fi coverage on its main and regional campuses. In general, classrooms, unions and other common indoor gathering areas have strong coverage, as well as residence halls. Connectivity in outdoor areas is limited.

The OSU Wexner Medical Center maintains separate secured and open wireless networks for doctors and patients.

Which network am I supposed to use?

If you are an Ohio State student, faculty or staff member, connect to osuwireless for your laptops, tablets and smartphones. Use Registered4OSU for devices without web browsers, such as gaming consoles and smart TVs. Visit our Knowledge Base for a detailed list of devices and available networks.

If you are a guest to Ohio State that comes from an institution that participates in eduroam, connect to eduroam.

Otherwise, connect to WiFi@OSU.

What if my device is not connecting?

There are many reasons why a device may fail to connect to osuwireless. The most common reasons are either the device is misconfigured or a wrong username and/or password is used. Both of these issues can be solved by using the configuration utility(link is external) to automatically configure your device for osuwireless.

It's also possible the device does not support 'WPA2 Enterprise(link is external)' encryption and authentication. In that case, first determine if there are any software updates available for the device. If that doesn't help, it may be that the hardware simply does not support WPA2 Enterprise.

If the configuration utility does not resolve your connectivity issue, please contact the IT Service Desk at 614-688-4357. Be prepared to provide your name.#, what device you're using, the location in which you are unable to connect and the last date and time when you were unable to connect.

If you are a parent, guest or visitor and have connected to WiFi@OSU, you must first open a web browser and go to wireless.osu.edu, and upon being redirected to a login page, review the acceptable use policy and then log in as a guest.

I changed my password and now my Wi-Fi is broken. Help!

After changing your password, all of your devices that connect to osuwireless will need to be updated with the new password. The easiest way to do this is to use the configuration utility(link is external) to automatically configure your device for osuwireless using your new password.

My device won't connect to osuwireless and doesn't have a web browser for WiFi@OSU. What do I do?

If your device doesn't support the encryption required to connect to osuwireless, AND it doesn't have a web browser that would allow you to log in, you will need to first register your personal device(link is external).

You will need to locate the MAC address of the device, then log into the My Devices page to register the device. Once registered, disconnect the device and then reconnect to Registered4OSU using the unique password you received during the registration process.

What are the technical requirements needed for my device to connect to the Wi-Fi network?

osuwireless and eduroam are secure Wi-Fi networks due to their encryption and authentication requirements. In order to connect to either of those networks, your device must support the following:

  • WPA2-Enterprise (Wi-Fi Protected Access) using AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) - WPA2-Personal is not the same thing
  • EAP (Extensible Authentication Protocol) methods PEAP/MSCHAPv2 (uses a username+password) or EAP-TLS (uses a certificate)
  • Supports 802.11ac or 802.11n protocols
  • While it is preferred that your device operates in the 5GHz frequency bands, 2.4GHz is supported as well

Registered4OSU is a secure Wi-Fi network that requires WPA2-Personal. To connect, you must first register your device and then use the assigned Wi-Fi password when connecting to the Registered4OSU Wi-Fi network.

WiFi@OSU is not encrypted. Simply open a web browser, review the acceptable use policy, and log in as a guest or visitor.

Why is my Wi-Fi slow?

Many things can result in a slow Wi-Fi experience. If you connect while far from a coverage area, you will connect at very slow speeds, if at all. In general, classrooms, unions and other common indoor gathering areas are well covered.

Another common issue that can result in slow Wi-Fi is outdated software on your device. Make sure you are using the latest operating system available. If you are using Windows, it is especially important to install the latest wireless software or drivers(link is external).
